The masterpieces of neorealism pioneered by director Roberto Rossellini spawned a new genre that changed how people thought about filmmaking, and Peccato Veniale is the great-granddaddy of it all. In this film, a group of delinquents force themselves into a church to rob it for food after an earthquake has destroyed their home. The priest does not attempt to stop them, and once they begin to feast on the church's food, they confess their sins to the priest. This is a rare film that contains no nudity and no violence, but the characters are so fully developed that it's impossible for an audience not to feel a strong connection to them. Giorgio Salvioni proved he had a knack for making films about crime and its repercussions with 1971's Le Mani sulla Città (Hands Over Rome), which is widely considered to be his masterpiece. Peccato Veniale went further, taking inspiration from Dostoevsky's The Idiot and focusing on morality as much as it does on crime.
